STEENBERGEN STIPEND

Romina Koopman wins Steenbergen Stipend 2022

This afternoon the Steenbergen Stipendium 2022 was awarded to Romina Koopman for her project At The Other Side Of The Rabbit Hole at the Nederlands Fotomuseum. Koopman reflects on how the photographic medium – within the digital age – creates an ongoing and evolving truth.

The honourable mention went to Mandy Nijhof for the project When life gives you lemons, squeeze them out in the eyes of your abuser. Nijhof makes self-portraits around the challenges related to her mental health. In her work, a combination of photography, painting and video, aspects of these challenges are also highlighted. In short, elements that refer to the trauma she experienced in her childhood.

Last but not least, the audience award went to Amy Opstal with The Parent Act.

From the report

The jury, consisting of Alexandre Furtado Melville, Juul Hondius and Vincent van Velsen, has awarded the Steenbergen Stipendium 2022 to Romina Koopman: “Koopman cleverly and convincingly translates her analysis of the abundance of images in our current society into a visualization of what the future might look like. She uses a broad materiality in the objects used to make her point that digital images are, as it were, treasures.”
