ABOUT

The Steenbergen Foundation was founded in 1961 by Johan Steenbergen (1886-1967) in memory of his older brother Hermann Diedrich Steenbergen (1883-1945). Johan was the founder of the Exakta camera factory in Dresden.

We support initiatives that stimulate individuals professionally, in line with the values from our vision. We undertake projects in memory of Johan Steenbergen, such as a research grant, together with the Drents Archief, for young historians. Currently, we have a yearly stipend for young photographers, together with the Nederlands Fotomuseum.

EXAKTA

On November 16, 1918, Johan Steenbergen founded “Ihagee Kamerawerk Steenbergen & Co.” Not being a technician himself, Steenbergen took on six Tischler (woodworkers) as partners in the new company. Emil English, Otto Diebel, Hugo Frauenstein, Emil Kirsch, Conrad Koch and Herman Schubert.

Steenbergen had a good sense for marketing and this was reflected in the products of the Ihagee. In the 1930s, the technician Karl Nüchterlein turned out to be an extremely talented designer. As 'Chefkonstruktor' - head of the team of designers - he was responsible for the design of the sensational Kine-Exakta, which Ihagee showed to the public at the Leipziger Messe in 1936.

The Kine-Exakta had a characteristic trapezoidal light metal housing with several remarkable features. Using the combination of a 35 mm 24×36 mm film in a single-lens reflex camera made the camera a great success in a short time.
